FREEZING COLOSTRUM

Freezing Colostrum: A Key to Preserving Quality

Freezing colostrum immediately after harvesting is essential to halt bacterial growth and preserve its quality. 𝗕𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗽𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗳𝗿𝗲𝗲𝘇𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝘁 -𝟭𝟰°𝗖 𝗼𝗿 𝗹𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 ❄️

In colostrum left at room temperature, bacteria will double every 20 minutes. This puts the newborn calf at high risk of disease, reduces colostrum quality, and impairs antibody absorption.

✅ A properly managed frozen colostrum bank ensures that the herd’s best colostrum is always available for all calves – supporting immunity, health, and development.

𝗧𝗶𝗽:
• Store colostrum flat in the freezer for fast, even freezing
• Label each bag with date and quality score
• Use colostrum with the highest Brix value first

Read the article (link below) to learn why freezing—not refrigeration—is essential for safe, high-quality colostrum.

THAWING COLOSTRUM

Preserve Antibody Integrity During Colostrum Thawing 🐄

Imagine reheating frozen soup in a pot – if you don’t stir, the outside gets too hot while the inside stays frozen. The same goes for colostrum.

Thawing colostrum is delicate. Too much heat can damage the valuable antibodies calves rely on. That’s why a rotating water bath is ideal – it gently stirs while warming, ensuring even thawing and preserving the colostrum’s full immunological value.

Is colostrum important to the newborn calf? Of course! But it’s the handling of colostrum that truly defines its value.

✅ Thaw fast and gently to enable high-quality colostrum feeding right after birth
✅ Freeze rapidly after milking the fresh cow to prevent bacterial growth and preserve quality

💡 Take advantage of the ColoQuick colostrum cartridge – its smart design ensures fast freezing and thawing by allowing air (when freezing) and warm water (when thawing) to flow efficiently around the bag.

The result? Thermoefficient handling that saves time and retains quality ✨

𝗖𝗤 𝗧𝗶𝗽 : Don’t stack bags in the freezer!

Instead, store each bag in a cartridge to allow airflow and speed up freezing. Arrange them flat to increase surface area and ensure even, rapid cooling ❄️

KEEP COLOSTRUM CLEAN

𝗠𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗛𝘆𝗴𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗺 𝗛𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 🐄

Strict hygiene protocols are vital throughout the colostrum handling process. Bacteria in colostrum impair the antibody absorption to the calf’s bloodstream after ingesting colostrum and increases risk of disease transmission.

Freezing stops bacterial growth but does not kill bacteria already present. So – ensure all equipment is clean and colostrum is handled under sanitary conditions. This prevents bacterial contamination and maintains the colostrum’s quality, safeguarding your calves’ health.

𝗧𝗶𝗽: Perform quality control of your work procedures by regularly taking out colostrum samples to measure bacterial level after milking, after handling- and directly from the feeding equipment.

PASTEURIZATION

The importance and complexities of colostrum pasteurization 🍼

The feeding of high-quality and clean colostrum immediately after the calf is born is crucial to preserve the calf’s potential and future performance.

𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗸𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘂𝗱𝗱𝗲𝗿, 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗺 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘀 𝗮 𝗹𝗼𝘄 𝗻𝘂𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗯𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗮, 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝗶𝘁 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗶𝗹𝘆 𝗯𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗯𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗮 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁, 𝗶𝗳 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰𝘁 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗼𝗰𝗼𝗹𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗱.

Colostrum pasteurization plays a crucial role in controlling pathogenic bacteria like Salmonella, E. coli and paratuberculosis which can compromise calf health. Additionally, it reduces the total bacterial count and total coliform count.

While pasteurization can be beneficial, it is not a cure-all solution. Colostrum with a high bacterial level will have compromised quality, caused by dead bacteria and toxins.

Therefore – It is essential to always prioritize hygiene in your colostrum management!

Tip: Make high demands on your colostrum pasteurization equipment. The pasteurization process must be carried out at 60°C for 60 minutes, as even a slight rise above 60°C can cause antibodies to be destroyed. Use high-quality rotational pasteurization equipment, maintaining an accurate temperature throughout the whole colostrum batch, to guarantee complete pasteurization and preservation of the valuable antibodies.

Read the article (link) which emphasizes the universal message of good hygiene and the importance of using a precision tool for colostrum pasteurization.
